New Site
Hello! Welcome to my new website. For those of you who aren’t aware, my previous website was nippoverse.xyz. This was my first website and first large scale project I have worked on, and I am very proud of how it turned out. I think the site is very pretty! However, I have learned a lot from my old site, and I think that doing an entire revamp was the best option for me. There are a lot of reasons why I decided to move to a completely different site instead of reworking the old one. So I will list off all the problems I saw in my previous site and what I will do to improve this one.
It was a mess
I think it was very silly of me to not really have a clear goal. My main reason for the crazy amount of categories on the site was because I was inspired by sites like melonking.net, which have a very wide range of topics and pages that you can go to. I thought that websites like these were very cool. They were a big inspiration for me to create a website. I wanted to create a space that invoked this feeling of magic and nostalgia. Most of my motives were fueled by the movement of “the modern internet is bad” and the best way to get away from the algorithms was to create your own site away from everything else.
I enjoyed the web 1.0 aesthetic where you just throw kinda crappy gifs and jarring art everywhere on the page. This was very fun to do, but I think now that I have had my fun, I want to create something that isn’t just a bunch of stuff thrown everywhere for the sake of “fun”. I’m not denying it was fun, because it was, and I still think it is now, but I don’t know how I feel making this the site that people see when they want to view my content. Like, this isn’t really “me”. I want a site where the majority of it uses assets that I have created. It feels satisfying to create a site where most of it is using stuff that I made, rather than using things I found elsewhere.
When I was creating this site, I wanted to strike a balance between “gifs and garbage everywhere” and “viewable and easy to digest”. I think where I am with this now is pretty solid and I enjoy the design of it!
It was a pain to update
Part of why the site died is because I was only updating it with raw HTML. I learned from this and have transitioned to markdown on this site. I’m not sure how long I will last updating this one, but I think it will last longer due to the fact that it isn’t a pain. Editing HTML code when you aren’t in the mood to do it is not enjoyable. Sometimes I just want to strictly write, and not mess with code, so when I am forced to mess with the code in order to write, I don’t want to write anymore.
The other issue was the fact that I created way too many categories to update on the site. I felt overwhelmed with how much I created. I thought about what was most important for the new site and toned it down by a lot.
It lacked an identity
I feel like this current site has the blue dog front and center. You know that this is the site with the blue dog on it. This probably isn’t a website thing and mostly a me thing, because I didn’t really target and prioritize an identity on the internet until now. I am happy that I have a character that I can fully play into and immerse myself in.
I used to go by “Nippo” which was a name that was connected to myself, but I felt like there wasn’t really a visual identity to connect that name to. I struggled to choose what to represent myself as on the internet. I like Aero because it is rememberable, at least to me, and I think the character that goes with it is very cute. I think this character represents how I want to be seen online, and I am happy with that.
What I want to achieve now
I made nippoverse.xyz three years ago, and throughout these three years I think I have been able to figure out what I want to focus on. I want to try to not focus too much on site design. I would face burnout working on my old site due to the insane amount of categories with differing styles, and I felt like more than half my time was spent on trying to make the site look unique on each page instead of actually adding content to it. I will definitely be prioritizing content and sharing my projects. The site design will be mostly uniform and follow a template. I still plan to be creative with it by making different sections of the site slightly different, but not to the point where I will have to spend way too much time on just the design.
As for my old site, for the time being I plan to keep it up and running, but I will no longer update the contents on it. I think it is a nice website to look back on, and I have received complements from people that the site is very pretty and unique, so it would be a shame to stop hosting it. I am especially proud of how the home page looks, but other than that everything else is kinda bad… haha. I can’t guarantee I will keep it up forever, but at the very least it will stay up for now.
I hope you enjoy my future posts and what I have to offer here :3
I also want to thank Scout from bitty bunny for helping me a ton with developing this website. They have done a lot for me and this site wouldn’t be here without their help.
